Halloween is just weeks away and it’s a good time to start preparing the pets in your home for their safety and comfort on that spookiest of nights. All Hallows Eve is of course fun for all the rest of the family, but often not so much for our four legged friends. Strange or loud noises, lots of unexpected or unknown visitors – all these things can make our pets a little jumpy, or even downright afraid.
When dogs and cats are frightened they are more likely to run away from their homes or dart into traffic. A stressed out pet may even seem have a total reversal of personality, scratching or biting people.
We recommend keeping pets inside, if possible in a quiet room where they won’t become agitated by all ghoulish visitors at the door. It’s also a good idea to make sure your pets have identification so that if they should run away they will have far better chances of being found.
Don’t Forget! Candy is fine for people but ANY sweet – particularly chocolate – is a big no no for pets!
It takes only 50 grams to kill a small dog.
Animals are also naturally curious so make sure you don’t leave Halloween candy out where they might get into it on their own!
Here are some extra tips for a safe and happy night for everyone:
Make sure to tell your own children not to approach stranger’s pets while trick-or-treating.
If possible keep pets indoors. If your pet is especially jumpy it make sure to give them plenty of toys and attention so they don’t think they are being punished.
Temporarily disconnect or cover the doorbell and leave a bowl of treats outside – just fill the bowl a little at the time if you’re worried about greedy goblins!
Make sure your pet is accurate identification.
Halloween doesn’t have to be scary! With just a little preparation you can help ensure that your furry friend will be able to enjoy the festivities with the rest of the family. If you hurry you can even order some delicious dog treats or cat treats from your friends here at Idaho Pet Foods to make it extra spoook-cat-ular! Ah ah ahh!
